- It's Latin name is Platinum. In the Periodic Table it is abbreviated
to Pt. It was discovered in 1735 in South America by Antonio de
Ulloa.
- The metal was used by pre-Colombian Indians.
- In 1822 plenty of platinum was discovered in the Ural Mountains
in Russia.
- Named from the Spanish word 'platina' meaning silver.
- It is a beautiful silvery white metal when pure, and is malleable
and ductile.
- It's the most expensive of the precious metals.
- It is very hard, difficult to work with and cannot easily be
polished.
- It is often rhodium plated to give it an extra shiny surface
as Platinum can have a soft grey sheen over time.
- Other uses for platinum; electrical contacts, dentistry, coating
missile nose cones, jet engine fuel nozzles, catalytic converters,
