Gold Plating and Other Miscellaneous Finishes
Different types of finishes found at Argenteus;
- Gold plating - a fine layer of gold which has been
electroplated onto the item. This layer can be quite fine or quite
deep
- Gold layer - a fine sheet of gold is placed on top
of the item, cut into shape and then soldered in place. The item
is then polished smooth. Gold layer is more substantial than plating.
- Rhodium finish -a fine layer of rhodium is electroplated
onto the item. Rhodium is very bright and shiny like highly polished
silver. It is often used to give a 'clean colour' to white gold
and to some silver jewellery.
- Palladium/Ruthenium finish - a layer of palladium
or ruthenium is laid into (or onto) the item to form a pattern.
- Titanium jewellery with inlays - a layer of gold
or silver has been laid into the titanium to form a pattern.
It is very important to clean these types of finishes carefully
- vigorous rubbing with a silver cloth will eventually wear the silver/gold/rhodium/palladium
or ruthenium away. Do not use a silver cloth.
- For plated items with a textured finish, clean using either Argenteus
Silver Dip or Argenteus Silver Foam and wash thoroughly.
Dry using a soft towel and leave it to dry in a warm atmosphere.
- Titanium, palladium, ruthenium are not reactive metals and do
not need cleaning.
- A good wash with warm soapy (washing-up liquid) water and a very
soft toothbrush works well with any of the above finishes. Dry item
carefully and thoroughly.
